Testimonials and Lesson Reviews √

James is amazing teacher. I can’t speak highly enough of him. I’ve learned so much from James. He has vast knowledge of music and an ability to teach that is invaluable. I always marveled at how James could just name of all the notes on the string from memory like it was nothing and recite music theory like second nature. James is a true musician and if you’re looking to just start out on guitar or hone your craft look no further. I’d also personally recommend checking out James’s awesome guitar solo’s if you want to hear some truly wonderful playing. I look forward to every lesson and learning something new. Sign up for classes now; you won’t be disappointed. √

“James is friendly, enthusiastic, and professional. He also is a great guitar player. You couldn’t ask for a better combination in a teacher! I started five weeks ago with very little experience playing guitar. James was able to help me build on my prior music background to get me playing real songs and rhythm right away – he tailored the lessons to my ability level and started working with me form the beginning to establish good habits. This has helped me improve rapidly. However, I never felt overwhelmed. He also keeps in touch with me via email and social media over the week, which motivates me to practice! I am really enjoying “feeling” myself get better each week. Thanks James ” Tilly SW3 √

“I have seen James every week for almost three years.  During that time I have learned a tremendous amount about playing the guitar and writing and recording music.  When I first visited James I was a moderately competent guitarist who could play others’ basic songs.  I now play in a band and have written over 20 songs that I have recorded with James.  James teaches in a hands-on, practical way and tailors lessons to students’ aptitude and musical tastes.  He is also an excellent producer who offers insightful ideas and guidance on all aspects of song structure, mix and sound.  He is very energetic and positive and my time in the studio is usually the highlight of my week.”

Jack

I’ve learnt so much so quickly. James’s lessons are great fun covering all the music i like and more. Plus the guitars at the studio are the best and so good to play!

Jason

Everything just clicked. All of a sudden the guitar became easy

David

There are guitar teachers, and there there’s James. James makes learning the guitar a total musical experience.

Hattie

I first studied with James Stratton in 2007. Under his expert guidance I started writing my own songs and am currently working on my third CD.  James is an inspiring and charismatic teacher with a deep-founded musicality and a full understanding of all different styles of music. He is great fun to work with and sensitive and adaptable to an individual’s needs. I highly recommend him to guitarists of any level who want to improve their skills or to beginners looking to fall in love with this beautiful instrument.  James works out of his own recording studio and is also a talented producer experienced in Logic.  To hear some of the songs we’ve recorded together go to

Daniel

I’ve had lessons with James for years and my guitar playing as improved considerably, both technically and creatively. He’s been extremely knowledgeable, helpful in improving my weaknesses, and is a great guy to learn from! Lessons are always fun, and i’d definitely recommend him if you want to learn guitar.

Charlie Weaver – Lonsdale Boys Club

Guitar is the universal language which James speaks fluently! James teaches guitar in a digestible, exciting way. He focuses on both theory and technique that culture you as not just a guitarist but a well rounded musician. His song writing and production expertise make for a unique and unrivalled learning experience. I owe an awful lot to James as a guitarist, musician, performer and songwriter – I hope this doesn’t sound over the top but he couldn’t come more highly recommended by me.”

Loz

Without question, James is the best teacher I have ever met.

Gehan

There is a little rock and roll lurking inside all of us; James specialises in teasing it out, sharpening it up and making it sound great! I play to relax and to entertain friends and family. James understands my level of commitment and tunes our lessons accordingly. My guitar skills have improved, but it’s also been loads of fun. He Keeps me rocking man!

Jon

Lessons with James have taken me Beyond my wildest dreams: I was one of those people who would say I have no musical abilities when asked if I play an instrument. When I first met james I could not play a chord, I didn’t even know what a chord was, 4 months later I played my first gig. I now play in 2 bands and have performed at cafe de Paris, the underbelly, barfly, bush hall and the troubadour. James’ wonderful teaching style, incredible knowledge of all musical genre’s and nurturing character has literally changed my life and he can change yours. Jon ford, lead singer, songwriter: Hijakkt and the rocky bay band

James

Having lessons with James for over 5 years has given me the opportunity to develop my guitar playing skills and technique as well as creativity. Lessons are always fun with James as he is so enthusiastic and willing to help in what ever way he can. He teaches with passion and genuinely wants to see each of his pupils develop and improve as a guitarist and a musician. I can not recommend James highly enough, without him I would not be close to the guitarist I am now!

Best Guitar Teacher in London. Passion, dedication, and pure fun – this is the London Guitar Academy. I am a beginner student on my third teacher in the last year, and James is the best by far. We have a group of three of my friends who are all on different levels, and he does a great job of challenging the advanced students and keeping the beginner on pace. He teaches you how to play entire songs with whatever chords that you know, instead of just learning certain parts of songs, which makes practicing much more interesting. His focus on quality technique over learning a lot of new things will benefit me in the long run. His talent as a guitar player inspires students to continue to learn.James’s is simply the best music class that I have ever participated in! 2 Thumbs up Paul  √

“Coming into a guitar lesson with James I  didn’t know what to expect. I was stuck in a rut. Now every week I have a something new to learn! It’s exciting to know that a teacher was once in your shoes and teaches at an exceptionally well pace. I’m never too overwhelmed and I always have something to do. I’m getting taught things i’ve always wanted to know!” — Ali SW7 √

“I have been taking guitar lessons for the last 9 months, and I already feel like I have accomplished so much! James not only has the proven experience but he also has GREAT teaching skills that have helped me reach my goals at a quicker pace.Guitar Lessons Kensington really are great! It’s a very collaborative learning environment and it’s exciting to know that I can pick a song and be able to work on it and not have to wait years to try it!” — Keith W8.

“After playing on my own for some time, I had gotten into all kinds of bad habits. I was very glad to start taking lessons with James because he has a great way of teaching guitar in an engaging, motivating way. Soon I was working out of my odd habits and learning how to play some amazing music, from Blackbird to AC/DC. James is excellent at bringing together playing style, technique, and music fundamentals in an efficient way that accelerates learning and makes it fun.”Chris SW1X  √

BB King Guitar Great

The Mighty Riley B. King (born September 16, 1925), known by the stage name B.B. King, is an African-American blues guitarist and singer-songwriter.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked him at No. 6 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time (previously ranked No. 3 in the 2003 edition of the same list),[1] and he was ranked No. 17 in Gibson’s Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.[2] According to Edward M. Komara, King “introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that would influence virtually every electric blues guitarist that followed.”[3] King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, because of this he is often nicknamed ‘The King of Blues’.BB also has an powerful soulful singing voice that has proved a powerful foil for his beautiful guitar playing.

BB King Lucille
Perhaps no other musical partnership has a history as long as that of the blues legend B.B. King and his beloved guitar named “Lucille.” Today the Gibson B.B. King Lucille model is a gorgeous ebony queen with gold hardware bearing King’s name on its headstock. But over the years there have been many Lucilles, including an actual woman whose name King took for his guitar. In the winter of 1949, King played at a dance hall in Twist, Arkansas. In order to heat the hall, a barrel half-filled with kerosene was lit, a fairly common practice at the time. During a performance, two men began to fight, knocking over the burning barrel and sending burning fuel across the floor. The hall burst into flames, which triggered an evacuation. Once outside, King realized that he had left his guitar inside the burning building. He entered the blaze to retrieve his beloved $30 Gibson guitar. Two people died in the fire. The next day, King learned that the two men were fighting over a woman named Lucille. King named that first guitar Lucille, as well as every one he owned since that near-fatal experience, as a reminder never again to do something as stupid as run into a burning building or fight over women.[1][2]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgTWSEfGwEU&feature=share

B.B. King wrote a song called “Lucille” where he talks about his guitar and how it got that name. The song was first released as part of Lucille and it is included on the B. B. King Anthology 1962–1998 album.

Lucille Blues Guitar Great

“It seems that it loves to be petted and played with. There’s also a certain way you hold it, the certain noises it makes, the way it excites me … and Lucille don’t want to play anything but the blues … Lucille is real, when I play her it’s almost like hearing words, and of course, naturally I hear cries.” — B.B. King, liner notes from the album, Lucille, 1968

What type of guitar pick?

Guitar Lessons London Plectrum

London Guitar Academy Plectrums @ London Guitar Lessons

No matter which type of music you play, all guitarists want picks that feel good in their hands, don’t slip, and are durable.A guitar pick is a plectrum used for guitars. A pick is generally made of one uniform material; examples include plasticnylonrubberfelt, tortoiseshellwoodmetalglass, and stone. They are often shaped in an acute isosceles triangle with the two equal corners rounded and the third corner rounded to a lesser extent.Thin picks will give you a thinner sound and produce a nice strum effect.  Medium gauge picks sound better for electric.  The medium gauge picks also work well when using acoustic guitars.  I find the thin picks sound good on Acoustic guitars as well, but not so much for electrics.

Thick picks (my preferred choice) work when you really want to dig in on an electric guitar, especially for power chords and rock soloing.  Using thick picks on acoustic guitars will give you a big duller sound, which may sound good depending on what you’re going for.

Try using your 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th fingers on the frets and use alternate picking with my right hand. Then I suggest is that you run up and down this a few times until you can play it without any mistakes. I would advise on using a metronome to improve your timing aswell, play a note each click and then try 2 notes per click then 4 and so on. Increase the BPM and this will help improve accuracy and speed.

Power Chords

When playing rock guitar… power chords are a useful too to help create a tough authentic had rock sound.Check out the Kinks you really got Me for an excellent example of early power chord use.Guitarists can use power chords In some styles of music, particularly in rock and roll, punk & heavy metal, it’s not always necessary to play a big, full sounding chord some times it’s very cool to keep it tough sounding. Often, especially on an electric guitar, it sounds best to play two-or-three note chords. This is when power chords come in handy. Built on the lowest notes of a regular open-position or barre chord in rock music to create a low sound.Power Chords are taught in our London guitar lessons and used in most styles of music but are particularly useful for rock guitar.Power chords sound sweet on the  acoustic guitar and on the bass guitar. Power chords are easier to play than are their full-version counterparts and don’t contain a major or minor quality to them, so they can stand in for either type of chord. Plus, they’re loads of fun to play!

Although a power chord consists of only two different notes that are always five steps apart, such as A–E or C–G, the actual chord that you play may involve more than two strings, because you may be doubling each of the notes that make up the power chord.Use your 1st, 3rd and 4th fingers to play CHUNKY POWER CHORDS & ROCK!

At the London Guitar Academy we do are fare share of Power Chords so if you feet like joining us for guitar lessons in London the feel free to contact us today.Dig in below & have FUN!

Major Scale "the Foundation of all things GOOD"

Guitar Lessons London:
Scales refer to a series of notes that go in an ascending and descending manner. The major scale is the foundation from which all other scales are formed. A C major scale begins with a C and ends with a C. The same rule applies with the rest of the keys where a D Major Scale begins and ends with a D and so on. The notes on a major scale is numbered from 1 to 8, this signifies the intervals
  • The major scale is the first of the diatonic scales
  • Another name for the major scale: the Ionian Mode
  • A major scale has 7 notes
  •  For the scale to be major, all that is necessary is that the whole step (W), (W), Half (H), (W), (W), (W), (H) pattern be followed.

The first and simplest major scale is the C major scale:

C Major Scale

  • The C major scale is the only major scale that doesn’t have sharps (#) or flats (b). We’ll see a bit further what this means.
  • If you play the C major scale on the piano
  • , only white notes are used (all the white notes) .
  • In solfege, the notes of the major scale are named like this: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti (or Si)
  • Another notation that is used is the following: C    D    E    F    G    A    B  C
  • For every note of the major scale you can make a chord…..
  • guitar chords in key of c major in grids

Numbers in the dots are suggested fingerings. Empty strings are muted or not played [most likely muted!].Bob Dylan like all GREAT songwriters definitely  knows whats the major scale is!

Guitar Lessons London we love music we play guitar @ London Guitar Academy

London Guitar Lessons Improvisation

London Guitar Academy: A Minor Pentatonic

The minor pentatonic guitar scale is a five note scale used often in rock lead guitar riffs and soloing, and is usually played over chord progressions that start with a minor chord.

The Minor Pentatonic Scale uses the 1, 3b, 4, 5, and 7b notes from the major scale.

There are 5 Minor Pentatonic Scale Patterns spread over the length of the guitar neck.

The A minor pentatonic scale is probably the most-used, most-heard, most-seen, and most-demonstrated scale in the rock guitar world. Video teachers use it constantly as the launching point for demonstrating all kinds of pentatonic scale ideas. A minor is a common key, and everyone’s favorite position for playing it sits nicely between frets 5 and 8.

As guitarists we tend to regard scales as patterns that can be moved up and down the neck depending on what key we’re playing in.We refer to these movable patterns as boxes or box positions. As an example, below is the minor pentatonic box, with the root on the 6th string.I use the minor pentatonic as an example because it is the first scale/box that most guitarists seem to learn.

A Minor Pentatonic Scale

Minor pentatonic scales show up everywhere in rock music. Top classic songs from bands like Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, and Foo Fighters feature minor pentatonic scales again and again.

Johnny Marr Guitar Great

The thing that always gets me about Jonny Marr is he left the Smiths when he was Twenty One! Jonny’s  got some seriously musically inflammable fuel in his tank! I’ve always been a big fan of his since i heard the early Rough Trade releases. My younger brother was a little bit ahead of his time and he was bang on the Smiths from day one.I clearly remember buying Hatful of Hollow in Probe Records Liverpool off this weird dude with bones around his neck & dreadlocks (Pete Burns) the Dead or Alive Frontman.Johnny’s sound was pretty unique for the time when he came along and along with The Edge,Will Sergeant (Echo and The Bunnymen ) & Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera Fame he was a shining light of the guitar in the 80’s. At London Guitar Academy we love Johnny for his melody, chord use & most of all the great songs he’s contributed to! Plus he drove Noel Gallagher from a flegling Oasis to by a guitar from Musicground in Doncaster the same place i drove to from Cheshire to buy my first Les Paul.So nice one Johnny & THANK YOU FOR THE INSPIRATION & JANGLE.

Sixteen clumsy & shy i went to London & i…….. bought a Guild Twelve string & got the best job in the WORLD! I sit in a huge Loft Space on LONSDALE ROAD  all day play my guitar with the best people in London.Every guitar student i see wants to be there….So life is GOOD!! It’s true GUITAR LESSONS LONDON @ London’s HOME OF GUITAR TUITION… the LONDON GUITAR ACADEMY!
