Major Scale | Guitar Lessons London | Music Theory for Guitar

Major Scale | Guitar Lessons London | Music Theory for Guitar

Major Scale | Guitar Lessons London | Music Theory for Guitar during your evolution as a lead guitarist, it becomes more and more important to learn to solo in more than one position. If, for example, you’re soloing in the key of C major, and you only feel comfortable playing in the few frets surrounding the eighth fret, then you’re limiting yourself unnecessarily.

The Major Scale is the most important scale of all.
All modes are derived from this scale. Modes are altered scales. In other words, you make some notes sharp or flat. Each mode like the major scale has a quality. The major scale‘s quality is happy and upbeat. These qualities are more prevalent when you integrate the chords which are shown above into your playing. In the chart below you will see that I have marked off patterns. The major scale is the cornerstone of all western harmony. It has seven notes plus the octave in practice,  Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti and Do.

There are 5 patterns .

Description: This scale is used as base scale from which other modes and scales come from.
Quality: Happy or Upbeat quality
Musical Styles: Rock, Country, Jazz, Fusion
Chords: Major, Major Sevenths, Major Ninths, Elevenths
Intervals: (W – Whole Step, H – Half Step)
Root -2-3-4-5-6-7-Octave
W-W-H-W-W-W-H

The scale formula for the major scale must be memorised, as you will use it often to work out chord tones. The formula describes the interval distances between each note of the scale.

T ^ T ^ S ^ T ^ T ^ T ^ S
(T=Tone, S= Semitone)

The scale shapes is movable. That just means that you can move your starting note anywhere on the 6th string. Just remember whatever note you start on will be the root note of that major scale. If you move this scale to where you are starting on the A note on the 5th fret of the 6th string you would be playing an A major scale.

To play each scale on the guitar, begin with the correct fret on the first string (the top string as you hold the guitar, the low E string), which is as follows:

  • Openstring: E
  • 1st fret: F
  • 2nd fret: F#/Gb
  • 3rd fret: G
  • 4th fret: G#/Ab
  • 5th fret: A
  • 6th fret: A#/Bb
  • 7th fret: B
  • 8th fret: C
  • 9th fret: C#/Db
  • 10th fret: D
  • 11th fret: D#/Eb
  • 12th fret: E

The Song Remains The Same

The Song Remains The Same

GUITAR LESSONS LONDON are delighted to share this article written by student and good friend Auryn Jones.

I have always loved the guitar, playing and listening, it is a fantastic instrument of wonder and passion. The sounds that can be created are like no other, its like magic when you find that awesome riff or the melody that could sooth angels. Many bands and artists have based their whole persona purely on the guitar, for example Led Zeppelin.

The greatest rock group of all time, their music has inspired thousands of players, but what many people didn’t know about this group is that almost 40% of their songs are acoustic. The guitar has been constantly developing, from blues and jazz to death metal and screamo. But the idea and aim for all these guitarists has been the same since the beginning, to create something someone else couldn’t. Jack White from the white stripes, a fantastic rhythm guitarist who has created and developed some of the most keen riffs in music to this day.

White Stripes

White Stripes

Jimi Hendrix, the most influential and musical guitarist ever, his songs weaved through the public eye, many people misunderstood what he was looking at.

Jimi-Hendrix-guitar lessons

Jimi-Hendrix guitar lessons

The guitar is a unique instrument, the sound that is created all comes from its user each individual player is different, you may want to play in the style of Hendrix but you will still be playing in your own way. If the person is sad, this will be reflected in the music he writes or plays, the guitar is not just an instrument is is also a sort of medium for emotions. For anybody who is writing music or playing, it all comes from a creative spark, usually being very spontaneous. Playing the guitar is just the key, it unlocks a whole new culture, you begin to explore music, find new artists you have never heard of before, perhaps a Swedish neo-classical speed player Yngwie Malmsteen. As you begin to play and you’re past the point of giving up, the road of music becomes wider and longer stretching the sounds of what you know, the different genres spread out like branches.

As you practice and play more, your style changes constantly changing and evolving into something new. As soon as I uncover a new technique or lick I play and play, not so I can ‘master’ technique but so I can explore the details around it. Some people find playing the guitar is there way of letting out their everyday annoyances, if someone honks the horn in the car behind you or if you were to spill a cup of water. Some people see the playing as a battle, they want to conquer the instrument.

The Song Remains The Same

The Song Remains The Same

Being able to play the guitar is a life achievement you can do something that someone else cannot do without years of practice, they can’t have beginners luck. Human beings love music and they always will. So if you ever go astray on your playing or thinking your not progressing go back to that goal in your head, the reason why you  wanted you to start in the first place, that thing or idea and just picture the goal. The day when you pick up a guitar and there’s nothing coming through whatsoever. There’s no new ideas or your hands are too stiff to play. That’s the sort of nightmare every creative person has. There’s always that point when it might happen to you, when you’re too old to pick the guitar up. And we’re just trying to keep that day far, far away, and out of sight.

Chris Bryant’s
This place, you guessed it, has been run by Chris for over 30 years and is the perfect spot to pick up entry level guitars. There’s always a good mix for second hand and new kit to choose from and feel free to offer up your old ones to get some cash.
126 Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0LA  0207 836 4723

Hanks
While the place has been open to the public as Hanks for the passed six years, takes the title for London’s longest standing guitar shops once taking into account all it’s previous owners. Situated over three floors, you come here for a bit of everything. Two floors worth of acoustic, one vintage and the other electric. Something for everyone.

Regent Sounds
Chris, the owner of Regent Sounds,  is the front man to what could be known as a landmark of musical history. Opened in 1956 and used as a publishers and comic book store, it was in the 1980s when it became a studio to be used by the greats including The Kinks, Hendrix and many others. Today, the quality of guitars they stock represents such greatness with top brands – primarily Fender and Gretsch – lining the walls.

Macaris
Meeting cousins Steve and Anthony was like being read the Macari family history book. The start of the story was when their grandfather set up shop in the 1950s, soon followed by their fathers Larry and Joe who really go it going. Today the pair stand strong with two Macari shops (the other one is on Charing Cross Road) that act as a sweet shop for instruments. While their one on Denmark Street is mainly for guitars, the other expands their offerings to include everything from violins to didgeridoos.
