NEW ALBUM REVIEW LOOK HOW FAST A HEART CAN BREAK – THE SINGLES

Released earlier this year but only just finding its way on to the turntable of London Guitar Academy reviewer, Paul Wood, “Look How Fast A Heart Can Break” is the first album in 7 years from US “garage/powerpop” band “The Singles”.

Reformed initially with Jenny Pirch (vocals/bass guitar), The Singles are now down to a duo comprising Vincent Frederick (guitar/lead vocals) and Nicky Veltman (drums/back-up vocals).

Their bio states that their sound is a combination of garage rock, power pop, glam, blues, and punk – that’s not a bad description and it’s certainly one that is guaranteed to tick most of the “must have” boxes for your LGA reviewer

LOOK HOW FAST A HEART CAN BREAK – THE SINGLES

Vincent had originally been songwriter/guitarist/singer with the earlier incarnation of The Singles which released albums “Better Than Before” in 2003 and “Start Again” in 2007

Here’s a link to the official (karaoke inspired) video for the album’s lead off track and current single  – “Inamorata”.

The track starts with what seems like the guitar intro for some heavy metal number but then crunches into a sound reminiscent of T Rex/The Sweet/Slade at their glam rock best.

The first single released in advance of the album was (She’s Got A) Heart Of Stone” which swings between sounding like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and classic 60s pop.

Here’s the official video:

The whole album is choc-full of garage pop classics.

Here’s a live clip of the band playing second track “She Runned Away”:

All of the songs are centred on a theme of heartache and heartbreak – wrapped up in 3 minute pop gems, almost any of which could be lifted as a single.

If this is the type sound that grabs your ear then this album is a definite must have.

The band has recently completed a lengthy summer tour of the US and there is hope for some European dates next year.

The new album is available on CD and vinyl. Check out the band’s website at:

NON-ALBUM TRACK

Here’s the b-side to “She’s Got A Heart of Stone” featuring Jenny Pirch on vocals.  A track which sparkles with that distinctive 60’s girl group sound..

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Here’s a track from the previous version of the The Singles – the 2009 cut –“Can You Go Out Tonight”.  A clear nod to the Beatles in parts but any track where the short goofy guy with the glasses gets the girl at the end is alright with me!
