Pentatonic Scale Pattern 1

The first pattern of the minor pentatonic scale is the pattern that most people learn first on the guitar. This is the “go to” pattern for most popular solos as well. If you only learn one scale, this is the one to learn.

This is the “home” pattern of this scale beginning on the root note of the scale. Remember to use your first and fourth finger on the four fret stretches, and your first and third finger on the three fret patterns. Use alternate picking. Try to pay attention to the shape the scale makes under your hands. That will make the scale easier to move to the other frets.

With this exercise, begin by playing the scale pattern from the first fret on the sixth string. Once you get to the fourth finger on the first string, repeat that note and reverse the pattern back down the scale. Once you get to the sixth string, move up to the second fret and repeat the whole sequence from there. This is a repetitive exercise that’s meant to help you build technique. So, continue on from there playing through each fret, once you get to the twelfth fret, shift back to the eleventh fret and work your way back down the neck. When you get to the first fret again, end the exercise on the first fret sixth string with your first finger.
