Frequently Asked Questions – Guitar Lessons in Dollis Hill
General Information
What styles of guitar do you teach?
We offer tailored guitar lessons across a wide range of styles, including rock, pop, acoustic, classical, blues, jazz, and folk. Whether you want to strum along to your favourite songs, develop classical fingerstyle technique, or play expressive rock and blues solos, every lesson is shaped around your musical goals and preferences.
Do you teach complete beginners?
Yes — beginners of all ages are warmly welcome. No previous musical experience, ability to read music, or instrument knowledge is needed. We start with the fundamentals: correct posture, basic chord shapes, simple rhythm patterns, and tuning, so you build a solid foundation right from your first lesson.
What ages do you teach?
We teach students of every age, from children (usually from around 6 years old) to teenagers, adults, and retirees. Lessons for younger children are kept engaging and age-appropriate. Adults can choose flexible goals — from relaxed hobby playing to advanced technique, music theory, or performance preparation.
Equipment & Preparation
Do I need my own guitar for the first lesson?
It is helpful to have your own guitar so you can practise between sessions. However, if you are a complete beginner and would like to try a lesson before buying an instrument, a guitar can be provided for your trial session. We are also happy to advise on the best size and type of guitar (acoustic, electric, or classical) for your needs and budget.
Should I learn on an acoustic, electric, or classical guitar?
The best choice is the guitar that plays the music you love:
- Acoustic – Ideal for singer-songwriters, pop, and folk.
- Electric – Perfect for rock, blues, pop, and metal. Many beginners find the thinner neck and lower string action more comfortable.
- Classical – Nylon strings are gentler on the fingers and excellent for classical, Spanish, and traditional fingerstyle playing.
What should I bring to lessons?
Please bring your guitar, a notebook or folder for lesson materials, a tuner (or smartphone tuning app), and a few plectrums. If you play electric guitar, amplifiers and cables are provided in the studio — you only need to bring your instrument.
